Wonderful World of Microbes

Escherichia coli

Fluorescently labeled E. coli flagellar filaments.

E. coli swarming colony with chiral branches.
Colony branches curve in a clockwise direction as a result of unidirectional fluid flows at colony edge. See: Wu et al., PNAS 108(10): 4147-51.

Canal-like structures created by bacterial colonies
Shown in the image are canal-like structures created by bacteria for directed material transport over centimeter scales. This striking phenomenon is a microbial counterpart of pressure-driven body fluid transport in animals and plants. See: Li et al., eLife 2022.
