Outline
This
course is for senior undergraduates and first-year postgraduates. It
illustrates how to tackle and solve photonics-related problems and
applications using previously learned fundamental knowledge in physics.
Emphasis is put on the understanding of the working principles of
photonic and optoelectronic devices instead of rigorous mathematical
derivation. The course covers the materials and devices used for light
generation, transmission, modulation, and detection. Since a number of
optoelectronic devices are made of semiconductors, a previous knowledge
of solid state physics is preferred, but not necessary.
