Undergraduate Studies

Introduction

Our programmes of studies are designed with the aim of training our students to have a good grasp of fundamental knowledge and general methods, and to appreciate and understand their important applications in the modern society. Courses are offered in the form of lectures, laboratories, small-group discussions and problem solving sessions, seminars, and projects. Some courses are being taught with the multi-media courseware in the integrated teaching studio. In our BSc programme in Physics, in addition to the basic courses which are required, other electives of advanced and/or applied nature at various levels are available for a student to choose. Advanced programmes leading to MSc, MPhil and PhD are also offered.

During the summer, the department organizes various activities to enhance the learning experience of its students. These include Summer Undergraduate Research Exchange (SURE) programme with renowned overseas universities, Overseas Program for Undergraduate Students (OPUS)Summer Teacher Apprenticeship (STAR) programme with secondary schools in Hong Kong, and Summer Internship at Hong Kong Observatory.  There are also many informal guided study or research projects offered to undergraduate students.  In addition to scholarships offered by the University, outstanding students of the department are qualified to compete for the CN Yang Scholarship and the Physics Prize.
