This module introduces the basic ideas in quantum mechanics, which is the fundamental theory in our understanding of matter. Topics to be discussed include: the particle properties of light, the wave properties of matter, the necessity of using a wave description for matter and its consequences (e.g. wave function and its interpretation, atomic spectra, energy quantization, Schrodinger equation, periodic table, uncertainty relations), and the current trend on the design and manipulation of quantum systems (e.g. nanoscience and technologies, microscopy based on wave nature of matter). [Students are expected to have a good understanding on the concepts of waves at the HKCEE level.]
