The City

Hong Kong, known as the Pearl of the Orient, is one of the most exciting and beautiful cosmopolitan cities in the world. It is situated on the southern coast of China and is geographically the center of East Asia. Occupying an area of slightly over 1,000 sq. km, it has a population of around 7 million people. There are 9 universities and colleges in the territory, of which 6 offer programs in physics and/or applied physics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. For more information about Hong Kong, please refer to Hong Kong Tourism Board Home Page.

Weather

The season in June is summer. Weather is hot and humid. Temperatures range from 26oC to 33oC, humidity near 86%. Short sleeves and cotton are best, with a lightweight sweater for air-conditioned restaurants. An umbrella or hat can ward off the intense sunshine. Please refer to Hong Kong Observatory Home Page for 7-day weather forecast.

Currencies and exchange

The local currency is the Hong Kong dollar. The Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar at a rate of approximately US$1 to HK$7.8. Banks generally offer better exchange rates, most banks levy a HKD50 commission for each transaction on non-account holders.

Major credit cards can be used in most mid to top-range hotels and department stores, but cannot be used to pay for local transportation. Canteens and restaurants in CUHK campus accept cash in HKD only.
