About MSE Programme ¡@

Materials such as metals and alloys, electronic materials, ceramics, composites and polymers provide the backbone to all innovations in many branches of science and technology.

The objective of our Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Programme is to train students to design and fabricate materials with a clear understanding of the implications of these materials in industry and environment.

The MSE programme integrates Science, Engineering and Management. It emphasizes both the fundamental and practical aspects of materials. Accordingly, students in the programme will learn basic properties of different types of materials so that they will be well equipped with the necessary background to design materials for various purposes.

Their knowledge about materials will not be just drawn from conventional classroom teaching, but from hands-on measurements and characterization with modern analytical tools such as transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, x-ray emission spectroscopy, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, and mechanical testing. Furthermore, some laboratory courses, like ceramics and microstructural analysis, are so designed that students will actually synthesize and process materials into practical products.

MSE offers basic courses on thermodynamics of solids, kinetics of materials processes, metallograpgy and mechanical properties of solids. It also offers applies courses such as ceramics and their industrial applications, polymers and their applications, microstructural analysis, electroplating and electronic packaging. In addition, the programme having an arrangement with the Faculty of Engineering facilities students to take engineering practice, microelectronic devices, solid state electronics and others, even to minor in Electronic Engineering.
