The objective of this =
Guide to=20
Thesis Formatting is to provide quick and general reference =
for=20
postgraduate students of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in =
preparing=20
their theses. The actual format, style and abbreviations should be =
decided=20
by the Graduate Division in accordance with normal practice =
adopted by=20
journals or other publications commonly used in the=20
field. Order of=20
contents
A thesis should contain the following parts in the order shown: =
i) Title page
A title page =
should=20
contain the following information:

- the name of the student, to be =
identical=20
with that shown on the HKID card or passport
|
- the name of the supervisor(s) =
(for a=20
doctoral thesis, as requested by ProQuest Information and Learning Company for =
microfilming=20
purpose)
|
- the degree for which the thesis =
is=20
submitted

- the name of the programme =
|
- the name of the =
University=20
|
- the month and year of =
submission=20
|

ii) Abstract
A short abstract, in both Chinese and English, =
should be=20
included in each copy of a thesis submitted.
For =
Master=92s theses,=20
the length of the abstract should be 200-500 words.
For =
doctoral=20
theses, the abstract shall not exceed 800 characters in Chinese or =
500=20
words in English. The abstracts of doctoral theses will be =
microfilmed by=20
ProQuest Information and Learning Company and its editors will =
shorten any=20
abstract which exceeds 350 words.
The heading of the =
abstract=20
should be as follows:

iii) Acknowledgements (if any)
iv) Table of contents, paginated
Where applicable, a list of tables, figures, symbols or =
abbreviations=20
may be included.

Format=20
i) Paper size
The thesis, whether in Chinese or in English, =
should be=20
typewritten on international A4 size paper (210 mm x 297 mm). =
Either=20
traditional Chinese or simplified Chinese is acceptable.=20
ii) Margins
The margin at the binding edge should be at least 4 cm, and the =
margin=20
at the outer edge, 2.5cm. iii) Spacing =
Double or one-and-a-half line spacing should be =
used,=20
except for quotations, footnotes, references and captions, which =
may be=20
single-spaced. iv) Pagination
All pages, except the title page, should be =
numbered.=20
Small Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, ...) are used for the=20
preliminaries (e.g. abstract, acknowledgements, table of=20
contents).
Arabic numbers (1, 2, 3, ...) are used for the =
text,=20
appendices and bibliography. v) Loose material=20
For easy identification all loose material =
which cannot=20
be bound in the text (such as slides and tapes) should be marked =
with the=20
student=92s name and degree for which the work is=20
submitted.
